The Immigration Debate
Filed Under Commentary | Posted on May 24, 2007
Every time I watch Lou Dobbs start ranting about the immigration debate, I’m reminded of a verse from Lou Reed’s Dirty Boulevard:
Give me your hungry, your tired your poor Ill piss on ‘em,
Thats what the statue of bigotry says.
Your poor huddled masses, lets club em to death and get it over with
And just dump ‘em on the boulevard.
On almost every other issue, Lou Dobbs is my hero, especially when he’s bashing the Klingon Bastard’s Republic of China; but on the immigration issue, I think he may just be inciting more bigotry and intolerance against all peoples with a nicer tan than his.
I know there’s a problem (or at least there seems to be general consensus among politicians and groups that I both like and dislike that there’s a problem, so basically I’m just assuming there must be one), and damned if I know what the answer is (although it might have something to do with penalizing the corporations that hire undocumented workers.) I do have a strong feeling that it would not be nearly as large an issue if millions of Canadians were streaming across our northern border, which leads me to believe that race and class prejudice is playing a much larger part in this debate than most of the anti-immigration activists would like to admit.
I also know that anyone who thinks the U.S. Government is capable of rounding up and deporting 12 - 20 million “illegals” is living in a fantasy world (most likely, it’s the same fantasy world in which George W. has the intelligence and integrity necessary to govern effectively as President of the U.S.). Maybe we should put Mike Brown in charge of that effort.
