Anglican Bishop Sets the Record Straight on “Heaven”
Filed Under Commentary | Posted on February 8, 2008
Many Buddhist writers, most notably His Holiness the Dalai Lama, often stress that Buddhadharma can be practeced by members of any religion; conversion to Buddhism is not necessary — in fact, it is often discouraged. That makes sense to me up to a point; but it also seems that, at some point, a […]

August 14, 2007: Mattel is voluntarily recalling 9 million of its toys because of hazards to children. The toys, all made in China, include Sarge brand cars, Barbie and Tanner, Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures. Earlier this month, Mattel’s Fisher-Price division recalled 1.5 million toys made in China. (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/14/recall/index.html)

Made in China Update
Filed Under China, Commentary | Posted on August 6, 2007
American consumers and retailers continue to remain oblivious to the rampant abuse of human rights perpetrated by the repressive Communist Chinese regime both within and outside of China’s borders. At least we’re beginning to see some concern expressed about the dangers of products imported to the U.S. by Chinese manufacturers.
CNN reports:
Toothpaste made in […]
A New Pledge of Allegiance
Filed Under Commentary | Posted on July 17, 2007
Surya Das just posted his Patriotic Pledge over at surya.org. It starts out:
I Pledge Allegiance
To this World Country,
To earth and sea and air, cherishing
All creatures, known and unknown,
seen and unseen,
And to the United State of America
And all the republicans, democrats, homeless,
And melting-pot others
For which it stands
I kinda like it. I also kinda […]
Crimes and Misdemeanors

James Ford’s post, “Possibly the Greatest Threat to the Republic“, led me to search for the Hendrik Hertzberg New Yorker article that was quoted in James’ post. It’s a pull-no-punches, tell-it-like-it-is critique of the damage done to human rights, the Constitution, and the moral fabric of the United States by our current vice-president, […]
Made in China

Lhasa Rising has a great post titled “Unraveling ‘Made in China’” on the Tibet Will Be Free blog. A couple of excerpts:
Carcinogenic shrimp? Lead-laced children’s toys? Toxic toothpaste? Defective car tires? We are shocked, shocked to see that “Made in China” goods turn out to be substandard, dangerous, or even deadly. Yet the […]
Walking on the Path of the Awakened State of Mind

In February of 2004, I was involved in establishing the Unitarian Universalist Buddhist Fellowship of Fayettteville. My primary motivation for creating the group arose out of 1) an intense interest in Buddhism, 2) an almost complete lack of any fundamental knowledge about Buddhism, and 3) the absence of a qualified teacher in the […]
Buddhism - “light on community compassion”?
Filed Under Commentary, Buddhadharma | Posted on June 2, 2007
Tyson Williams, in a strange little post entitled The Dalai Lama Down Under, cites some criticisms of contemporary Buddhism that he allows to stand unanswered. I thought I’d answer them.
Buddhism has been accused of being the religion you’re having when you’re not having a religion. Some argue it is a philosophy, not a […]
Daily Kos on China

I’ve never been a regular reader of The Daily Kos, but I may start. Just on a whim, I googled “China” for the site, the search returned quite a few hits. Here are some recent posts:
More Politicised Intel - this time on China

I Wish Tom Lantos was my Representative
Filed Under Human Rights, China, Commentary | Posted on May 25, 2007
I like Representative Tom Lantos (D-California). Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and member of the Congressional Caucus on Human Rights, Lantos has always been a courageous and outspoken advocate of civil liberties and human rights both in the U.S. and abroad. He’s one of the few U.S. congressmen to […]
